Exposure to cadmium via air in and around residences in the Dutch Kempen area does not pose an increased risk for public health, as concluded by RIVM on the basis of recent chemical measurements presented in this report. The observed concentrations indicate a practically negligible additional lung cancer risk. Neither does total human exposure (intake through food, soil, house dust and air) in the investigated area lead to an unacceptable risk of kidney damage due to cadmium. The present investigation was initiated after publication of a Belgian study in which an increased frequency of lung tumours is reported for a population living in close proximity to a former zinc smelter in the Belgian Kempen area. According to the Belgian study this increase was probably due to inhalation of cadmium. Other metals too were measured in and around residences in the Dutch Kempen area. Total exposures for these also remained below current health limits. Nevertheless, house dust in several residences in the most contaminated area (Budel-Dorplein), and one in a moderately contaminated area (Maarheeze), contained high lead concentrations. This contamination, however, probably came only to a limited degree from the environment. Domestic sources may exist, which for instance was the case for a resident who has soldering as a hobby.
