In the summer of 1993 60 of the 62 Public Health Services (PHS) in the Netherlands were visited in order to make acquaintance by a public health nurse accompanied by different staff members of the Department of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology (CIE) of the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM). Aim of the visits was to inform the PHSs physicians and nurses charged with infectious diseases control on the activities of the recently established CIE and to explore the possibilities for mutual cooperation. The visits offered a good opportunity for a free exchange of ideas. The PHSs appreciated the personal visit of the CIE staff. Following a checklist the following subjects were discussed: 1 organisation of infectious deseases control in the PHS, 2 current activities, 3 problems and obstacles, 4 future activities, 5 cooperation of PHS and CIE. Equivalence has to be the basis of cooperation between PHSs and CIE. In order to facilitate and optimize communication and cooperation the CIE will continue to make the knowledge and expertise of the RIVM, more easily accessible to the PHSs. The CIE will continue the organisation of the so-called Transmissiedagen, the publication of the Infectieziekten Bulletins and the participation in and contribution to the Bijkerk-meeting and several commitees and working groups together with representatives of the PHSs. The PHSs expect the CIE to elucidate the conditions for outbreak investigations, particularly with respect to the (financial) possibilities to submit samples to RIVM laboratories. Concerning surveillance of infectious diseases with the Infectious Diseases Surveillance and Information System (ISIS) the CIE has to involve experts of PHSs on time in the process and has to guarantee a good fit to the daily practice of infectious diseases control. Participation of PHSs in research projects initiated by the RIVM is dependent of the willingness to cooperate on the basis of equivalence and the balance in resources and efforts/capacity.
